Artist Statement
I make utilitarian pottery from porcelain.
The pottery that I make is made to be used on a daily basis.
Through the use of paired colors, patterns, and physical interaction, I seek a sense of control and balance.
When I am making pottery, I have the user in mind.
I am thinking about the ease of picking up the object from the table, how it can be stored in a cabinet; it is this focus that I bring to my practice that I hope causes people to use my work on a daily basis.
I am interested in how pairing colors and patterns forms unique compositions.
These subtle changes of color and visual depth creates further interaction.
When placing these colors and patterns next to each other, I try to make the lines and patterns as clean as possible. This sense of control is not only just for aesthetic reasons but for my own need for control in my life.
When making my work I make subtle differences.
The subtle differences expose themselves over time and allow for a sense of discovery over time. A sense of discovery and my care about how the user interacts with the object gives the user a reason to continue using my work far after they have purchased the piece.
